I am extremely happy to announce that in 2012 we will continue our partnership with GrowNYC.
Gerard Lordahl, Director of Open Space Greening at GrowNYC will again be on site for all our school visits. He will be leading the Edible Education Program at the Garden.
Gerard is not only extremely knowledgeable about all things green, but he has a special knack with getting the kids interested in everything from planting garlic to harvesting broccoli to making pesto. Gerard gives our students confidence in their abilities to grow and eat new foods.
I have especially admired his technique using active listening to get the kids involved in the learning process. Gerard is able to communicate by eliciting feedback from the kids. Students in their own words re-state the parts of a plant or the life cycle of an insect or what compost is or explain why dinosaur kale is called Lacinato Kale.
We look forward to another season at the farm with Gerard at the helm.
